Melbourne University cafe, Standing Room, is launching a second location on Monday in Melbourne’s Royal Arcade.
Since first opening in 2013, the pint-sized cafe has amassed a loyal fan base at the university. As students began to graduate and move into the city for work, owner Thomas Kelly says he saw an opportunity to grow the Standing Room brand.
“A spot came up in the arcade, and we thought, ‘It’s such a nice place that is crying out for good coffee’,” Kelly says.
Alumni from the Melbourne University store will feel right at home at the new location, just off Elizabeth Street. Five Senses coffee and cakes from Albert Park’s Hapsburg Empire will remain on the menu, with the addition of Butterbing cookies and croissants from Noisette.
The fit-out is the biggest departure from the original cafe. Collaborating with the Hunter Gatherer Group (also behind Mr Miyagi and La Chinesca) and construction company Twig & Co., Kelly and the team opted for a natural finish, in keeping with the heritage-listed arcade.
Don’t expect to get a seat at the new cafe – it’s sticking with the name for a reason.
