Meatmaiden (sister restaurant to Richmond barbeque restaurant Meatmother) will open at the end of the month in the basement of the Georges Building on Little Collins Street, which previously housed grill-house Little Hunter. Opening a new restaurant in the same space as one that lasted just seven months might feel ominous. But owners Neil Hamblen and Nick Johnston are confident their new venture will succeed.

Unlike the inconspicuous Little Hunter, Meatmaiden is well signposted. Its prices will be more inviting than its predecessor’s, too.

The menu, created by chef Justin Wise, is a stylish step up from its Richmond sibling. It’s also broader, with options for pescetarians and vegetarians.

Wise has taken advantage of Meatmaiden’s extra space, adding a new grill section to kitchen (which Meatmother doesn’t have) to complement the meat-smoker. For a meat blitz, order the Maiden’s Mood for a complete smorgasboard off the grill. Alongside a serious bourbon fixation, there’s a six-tap system set up at the bar with rotating local and American craft beer and a concise wine list too.
