Fromagerie Milk the Cow recently opened with a late night license on Fitzroy Street in St Kilda, right next door to Golden Fields.

Owner Daniel Verheyen (co-owner of city bar The Apartment), wanted to give people a choice for their cheese plates rather than be restricted by the standard brie, cheddar and blue you so often find. So he opened Milk the Cow, complete with up to 80 local and imported cheeses to choose from and expert cheesemonger Laura Lown in tow, having recently arrived from the UK where she worked at Paxton & Whitfield in London (who supply cheese to the Queen).

Complete with a communal table and outside tables, the smart room was designed by Zwei Interiors to create a country feel with lampshades made from milkers (traditionally fixed to a cow’s udder), an imitation grass wall and touches of recycled dairy equipment. But the piece de resistance is the four-metre cheese cabinet along the front counter, designed to resemble a gravel road.

Choose wine (they have an enormous selection of dessert wine too) and you’ll be presented with a wooden paddle, holding four cheeses and four tastes of matching wines that may include Caprinelle Goat’s cheese with Allram Gruner Veltliner or Rosina rose with Conquerant large camembert. It’s a perfect way of finding combinations you like.

But the true appeal of Milk the Cow is the operating hours. Opening until 1am five nights, it’s there for a cheesy late night pang.
