Daylight saving, surfboards in the back, hot nights and scenes from Puberty Blues – it’s these simple times and uncomplicated pleasures we usually associate with the drive-in cinema. One thing you never hear anyone reminisce about, though, is the food. It was usually soggy chips, hot dogs, and chiko rolls. Perhaps a potato cake or a dimmy for the sake of variety.

We certainly don’t want to give the heave-ho to any Australian icons, but needless to say, Melbourne’s food culture has blossomed since those nascent days and we’ve come to expect a higher standard. With this in mind, for one night only the Magic Mobile Drive-in is stepping up the drive-in food game with a broad selection from some of Melbourne’s most popular food trucks.

We start with lil’ nomnoms, an understated black-and-red food truck serving some of the punchiest Vietnamese dishes you’ll find north of Springvale. There’s a selection of spicy banh mi, banh bao, bun cha, and other provincial Vietnamese favourites on offer that truly represent Melbourne in the now.

Next to lil’ nomnoms, we have Dos Diablos, which will serve spicy, sassy, Mexican street food from its bright-red fire truck. Think of it as a California-style experience, with the smell of fresh fish tacos in the air and smoke billowing graciously out of the truck (which in a former life was operated by the Country Fire Authority).

For the romantics out there, get traditional with American-inspired fare from Mr. Burger. It’s one of Melbourne’s oldest and most-well respected food trucks, serving hearty, soft, melty burgers with crunchy chips and diner-style sides.

Tickets for the Magic Mobile Drive-in are available only by entering the ballot, and there are just 140 car spaces up for grabs, and if you win one, your ticket gets you a night under the stars, one of our hands-down favourite 80’s cult classics, food, entertainment and other surprises.

So where to find the Magic Mobile Drive-in? The inner-city location will be revealed 48 hours before the screening (but you can get an idea of the distance via the Magic Mobile Drive-In site). So enter the ballot and get set for a slice of nostalgia, with a few delicious mod-cons.

The Magic Mobile Drive-in will be in Melbourne the evening of November 15.
