Author and Broadsheet writer Hilary McNevin visited the south of France last year. On the trip she connected with a region blessed with medieval hilltop villages, idyllic fishing-port towns and a cuisine characterised by an abundance of Mediterranean produce.
So in between reporting on Melbourne’s food scene, McNevin took on a side project: researching and developing a culinary tour that showcases the best of Provence.
“The tour will focus on the towns of Aix-en-Provence and St Remy-de-Provence,” says McNevin. “We’ll wander along the Cours Mirabeau in Aix, a wide thoroughfare which hosts many cafes and galleries, and explore the cobblestone streets of St Remy-de-Provence, the town where Van Gogh painted The Starry Night.”
As for the food, there will be Provençal specialities such as bouillabaisse and tapenade, as well as foie gras, daube of beef and fresh scallops, oysters and pipis from the Mediterranean.
The tour will also include truffle hunting, trips to the local markets, a hike and picnic in a lavender meadow and wine tasting in Château de Pibarnon and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, two wine regions famous for its mourvèdre and grenache.
