Standing its ground at the foot of high-rise apartments on Chapel Street, burger bar and cafe Hello Sam is putting a polished spin on the diner tradition, serving up brioche bun burgers, craft beers and quality coffee (by Toby’s Estate) from morning to night.
Bordered by high planter boxes, a generous alfresco area sprawls the length of the cafe, while inside, a sleek configuration of bar-style seating and woven leather stools make the most of its long, narrow interior. Owner Katherine Sampson, who founded and operated sandwich chain Healthy Habits for almost two decades, wanted to create a versatile space with a homely but not kitschy feel. There are still a few retro flourishes like plastic and paper tableware and a cowhide on the wall, but don’t expect to see any sticky vinyl booths or laminate tabletops synonymous with burger joints.
From the B.A.D (Breakfast All Day) to the Parme-Sam or the Spicy Tofu, Hello Sam boasts a selection of burgers for every meal of the day, including gluten-free Naked Burger options that are served sans brioche bun. Each burger has been paired with a housemade sauce that range from hot and spicy relishes like fiery harissa mayo or spicy peanut and coconut sauce, to milder spreads such as fetta and yoghurt or beetroot relish.
