Food trucks have come a long way. In the past five years we've seen them evolve from beaten-up vans outside the MCG to dining destinations in their own right. It's getting to be a saturated market out there, but we can't help being excited by the news that Hammer & Tong 412 is putting wheels to tarmac with its own food van.
The hugely popular diner has already stretched our idea of what a cafe can deliver, nailing supreme brunch service and then staying open throughout the night for dinner. On top of all that, they're also popping up with a stall on Wednesday nights at the Luna Night Market at Queen Vic.
The food truck raises the bar of Melbourne's mobile eateries, with chef Simon Ward creating a menu of the same high standard fare that is currently served by the bricks-and-mortar kitchen in Fitzroy. Many dishes from the cafe have already found a home on the trucks menu, including the soft shell crab burger, the oysters and the lavender custard yogurt.
