Ask the nearest person where you can find a decent weekend brunch, without smashed avocado on the menu, at a reasonable price, that accepts bookings and they’re guaranteed to stutter.

We know of such a place: Andrew McConnell and Chris Watson’s Luxembourg Bar & Bistro. Head chef Chris Watson’s European menu repeatedly receives approval from critics and St Kilda locals, but now that same high standard has crept into the restaurant’s new summer brunch menu.

Between 8am and 11.30am the health conscious can order almond and coconut granola, while those who don’t count calories turn to ham, raclette and truffle jaffles. Centre cut bacon, boudin noir, roast mushrooms and fried eggs on sourdough could very well be the hangover cure of 2015, but it’s the house-made English muffin – piled high with grilled mortadella and served with green tomato ketchup – that has been winning, if not clogging, the hearts of happy customers.

If there’s cause for celebration, order a Mimosa or peach Bellini, or, if you’re feeling extra jovial, a $24 glass of champagne. If you’re feeling less chipper, maybe just a Bloody Mary.

The summer brunch menu at Luxembourg Bar and Bistro is only available on weekends. It will run until the end of February, potentially beyond, at 2/157 Fitzroy Street, St Kilda. Bookings at (03) 9525 4488.
