Aunt Maggie’s story begins back in Western Australia in the 1960s, with the Gertrude Street store’s co-director and owner Wayne Farrell sitting down to abundant Sunday night family meals with his particularly spirited Aunt Maggie.

He recalls a time “when organic food was called food, when no one checked labels, children rarely had nut allergies and a veggie patch was for everyone, not just farmers”.

Farrell’s childhood memories with Maggie smelt like freshly baked bread and tasted like buckwheat blueberry pancakes and homemade stews, all created with ingredients from local suppliers and producers, during a time when that was all people knew.

And so came the idea for a healthy food store and grocer in Maggie’s name. With a store already in Balaclava, a new one arrived on Gertrude Street just two weeks ago (right next door to Gertrude Contemporary) to the excitement of the health conscious, the dietary restricted and those who just want to eat well.

A large, open grocery store selling high-quality fresh fruit, veg and organic, healthy food for your pantry, Maggie’s aisles are stocked with an abundance of brown rice and quinoa, raw and gluten-free cereals, gourmet sauces, oils and spreads, organic beer and wine. Her fridges, meanwhile, chill organic meat, dairy and dairy-free ice cream and coconut yoghurt – her shelves full with natural shampoos and conditioners, moisturisers, mineral based make-up and chemical-free cleaning products. The variety here is incredible.
