As one of Brunswick Street’s original bars, it was only a matter of time before the Black Pearl needed a new look. Owner Tash Conte says locals can rest assured the vibe will remain the same: “Casual and relaxing, inviting and intriguing with the same serve up of our best banter (depending on who you speak to)”.
Reflecting back on 1999 (when Black Pearl first opened its doors), Conte paints a picture of what the partying scene was like. “The street parties went from Johnston Street to Alexandra Parade with booze and street food served until all hours of the morning. The council had to shut the parties down soon after, though, because the insurance costs became ridiculous,” says Conte. While Brunswick Street evolved over the years, one thing always stayed the same – Black Pearl.
At this stage, the details of the new design must remain under wraps. What Conte can reveal, however, is that there are two elements you can get excited about. “They are definite talking points,” says Conte, “The space will allow you to look around and be visually entertained, just like our Attic upstairs.” The Black Pearl bar began its renovations yesterday and is slated to reopen in August. The Attic upstairs is still trading as usual from Wednesday and can be accessed from the back laneway. Keep an eye on its Facebook page for all the updates.
