Step off the platform at Fairfield train station, past the shadow of the six-metre tall wooden dog keeping dutiful watch and you will find Railway Place. Home to auto parts stores and garages, there is little to catch your eye, until you happen upon the spare façade of Fifteen Pounds.

Inside, there is an immediate, rustic kitchen feel enhanced by the wooden crates of fresh vegetables and fruit behind the counter. The kitchen area is open, the walls are brilliant white and the floor is grey concrete, with wooden tables for customers each adorned with individual plants. Large windows allow generous sunlight to drench the interior and with a combination of individual stools and large, wooden communal tables, Fifteen Pounds caters for both the lone diner and the larger group.

Breakfast and lunch options are as diverse as the hash stack (homemade hash browns, mushrooms, spinach, cherry tomatoes and Hollandaise sauce) and house-cured trout with asparagus, rocket, poached eggs and truffle oil. Blackboards display inspirational quotes alongside the expansive menu, which includes appealing desserts and drinks.

There is a nice balance of the artisan and the artistic here, a definite feeling of freshness. The mellow bluegrass tunes permeating the space are a bonus, as is the discovery of the seating area in the courtyard, straight out of southern France – colourful hanging baskets, newspaper supplements, passionate conversation and the aroma of good coffee.

Fifteen Pounds proves a pleasant spot to begin your morning or enjoy a lazy hour. An organic treat on an industrial strip, it’s worth a visit for locals or day-trippers like us.
