It was a much-talked-about craze when the Sydney-based N2 Gelato opened its first Melbourne store on Brunswick Street, Fitzroy in (oddly) the winter of 2013. Mad-scientist-style gelato creations using liquid nitrogen lured the curious masses. After just adding a second Sydney store in Newtown last month, owners AnnGee Yeoh and Min Chai have finally opened a second Melbourne shop in the CBD.
The new N2 is in a prime position on Sutherland Street, also home to the popular Shortstop Donuts and healthy dessert heaven, Raw Trader. This space is more of a hole-in-the-wall compared with the spacious, industrial-style Brunswick Street store; it feels more like a pop-up, with a minimal look but with the same variety of unique gelato flavours.
The menu will refresh weekly as it does at the other stores, and Yeoh says that each list will include two flavours that Melbourne has never seen. “We really stretch the imagination with our flavours, we love to get crazy with them,” she says. Recent concoctions include chocolate crème egg, red velvet cupcake, a mango and passionfruit sorbet and a much less typical, but very intriguing, beer and cuttlefish option. We highly recommend tracking down the Ferraro Rocher-style gelato with homemade Nutella.
