Fans of Dukes Coffee Roasters in Windsor will be happy to know that this week saw the opening of its sister branch at the base of Ross House on Flinders Lane.
When the retail shopfront in Ross House, one of the only self-managed, community-owned and non-profit commercial buildings in Australia, became available last year, they wanted a tenant that shared and supported their social and environmental values and who could also help source some much-needed revenue.
With a commitment to minimising waste and sourcing organic and ethically made products, as well as pledging one per cent of their annual sales to environmental causes through 1% For The Planet – an alliance of businesses financially committed to a healthy planet – it seems Dukes couldn’t have been a more perfect fit.
What’s more, Dukes has spent the past three months developing a special Ross House blend, and will be donating $3 from every bag back to Ross House directly. The team is also looking forward to taking part in the Degraves Recycling Project with the City of Melbourne, and in the next few weeks will be using a commercial food dehydrator in the basement of Ross House to turn leftover food waste and coffee grounds into soil.
Aside from saving the planet, the team is flat out doing what they do best – pumping out specialty coffee and maintaining the sophisticated reputation they’ve built from their Windsor cafe.
Like most sisters, the two cafes sport a similar look (both designed by Chris Connell), however the Ross House location has a few unique quirks of its own. The interior has been fitted with recycled tiles and reclaimed timber and proves warm and intimate with minimal seating. The focus is primarily on coffee, although there is a quaint selection of pastries from Mosaic for you to either enjoy in or on your way to work.
The knowledgeable staff are quick on service but eager to make specialty coffee accessible for everyone who wanders into their store.
This will be owner Peter and Diane Frangoulis’ second cafe venture and, with the growing interest and high demand for Dukes roasted coffee, one can only imagine it might not be the last.
