In the festive season, it’s hard to think of much beyond getting through work, parties and finishing the gift shopping.

Charity initiative DineSmart makes it easy to support homeless people in your community – and all you have to do is eat out.

Until December 31, diners at participating restaurants are invited to add an extra $2 per table to their bill, which will go to local services tackling homelessness.

All the donations raised at a restaurant will go to grassroots charity organisations in the venue’s local community.

According to StreetSmart founder and CEO Adam Robinson, StreetSmart has now raised close to $4 million from Australian diners since it started the initiative in 2003 (not including this year’s campaign).

“We have enjoyed the ongoing assistance of some restaurants now for 12 years, and they work tirelessly to help us make this annual campaign a success,” says Robinson. “They understand how we work with smaller, community-based projects and have supported many organisations who otherwise would not be able to access funding.”

Anchovy, Chin Chin, Ladro, Higher Ground, Cutler & Co. are among the Melbourne restaurants already signed up.
