It’s a new and unusual splash of colour and flavour on Brunswick Street. Open for just over a month, Cruzao Arepa Bar is flying the flag as the first fully licensed arepa bar in Melbourne, and they’re proud of what they do.

The focus here is (understandably) the arepa - kind of like the Venezuelan answer to the hamburger, but better. Dense pocket bread made of cornmeal, stuffed with a rainbow assortment of fillings and grilled till crunchy- might be beef, pork or chicken, but there are vegetarian options too. Match it with a mojito and a sunny afternoon and you’ve got a little bit of Latin America right in the heart of Fitzroy.

The space at Cruzao has been stripped back to bare brick walls and then coloured up with an array of bright chairs and funky industrial hanging lights.

With a bar as part of the colourful set up, bring on the cuba libres.
