What was once an abandoned, run-down milk bar on the corner of Canning and Pigdon streets in Carlton North, has been transformed into the simple and adorable Cafe Bü, serving 5 Senses coffee, toasties and delicious baked treats. The tiny interior has a minimalist but effective fit-out. Well-crafted wooden boxes serve as tables and chairs without taking up too much space. The large window looking out onto Canning Street serves as a perfect quick-serve option for passersby after a snappy takeaway or weekend cronut.
Mother and son team, Amanda and Nick Büsst took over the building – originally intent on renovating it to become a residence – and have created a friendly hole-in-the-wall for people of the neighbourhood to stop by at during their stroll for a daily latte or a rotating, single-origin filter coffee. A firefighter as well as a cafe owner, Nick comes from a hospitality background – managing pubs and fine dining restaurants. Perhaps Bü’s most appealing feature is the upstairs deck, where customers can sit and drink their coffee while watching the bikes on the thoroughfare ride by.
