Attention, sports fans: the husband-wife team behind red-velvet-clad cocktail haunt Polly is opening a new sports bar next door.
The Roy will have six beers on tap, as well as rotating craft specials, and a big screen for the big game (or the big fight, or the big race).
Owner Casey Gordon says locals can expect a "laid-back, approachable" 65-seat spot, which will be accessed from a nameless alley behind Polly, parallel to Brunswick Street. Princes Pies is on board to provide simple sport-watching snack essentials.
“We live locally and a lot of the pubs and venues you can go to to watch a game are either old TAB bars or they’ve been jazzed up into nice restaurants,” Gordon says. The Roy will be “a sports bar, but a little bit more” where you can “get a nice top-shelf whisky and a good beer without being in a soulless TAB pub.
"We'll play the games but it is not purely our focus. The bar is holistically focused on allowing patrons to come and watch the game, have a nice drink, in nice company."
Construction of the new bar has taken two years.
The Roy will open in mid-November.
