Super Salad at The Farm Café – Abbotsford
The Super Salad at Farm Cafe is one of our all-time favourite wholesome experiences. It’s made with avocado, quinoa, carrot, beetroot, leafy greens and pepitas with pomegranate-molasses dressing and cashew mayonnaise. It’s vegan and costs $16.50. Have it for lunch or breakfast, eat outside, smell the hay underfoot and then do your weekly shop at the market if you’re there on a Saturday.

Brekkie Greens at St Edmonds – Prahran
Getting your hit of greens early in the day is easy with the Brekkie Greens at St Edmond’s, just off Greville Street. It’s a honey-mustard-dressed mix of raw broccolini, shredded kale, avocado, fresh chilli, buckwheat kernels, pistachio and two poached eggs for $16.50. As an extra, you can add sourdough, gluten-free or grain toast (for $1) or shredded roast duck for a total of $21.

Breakfast Salad at Patch – Richmond
Inspired by a hunter-gatherer diet (using only natural products and unprocessed foods) this paleo cafe makes it easy to eat healthy. One of its most popular dishes is the breakfast salad, which comes with kale, avocado, pomegranate, almond, cauliflower and a soft-boiled egg with micro herbs on top for $17. You can add some meat from the protein-hit section of the menu – try salmon, kangaroo, chorizo, pulled pork or a caveman steak.

Citrus Fruit Salad at Pillar of Salt – Richmond
Fresh fruit salad has long been a light way to start the day and is a little bit more familiar for breakfast. This one from Pillar of Salt caters to a sweet tooth. It’s made with citrus fruit and comes with blueberry- and chia-seed Coyo yoghurt topped with millet and amarynth popcorn. This one is gluten and processed sugar free (PSF) for $12.50.

Breakfast Salad at Barry – Northcote
Broccolini is on menus at cafes across the city lately, and Barry on High Street is among them. From day one, the breakfast salad at Barry was as much of a hit as the slick Northcote cafe itself was. Its breakfast salad is made with raw broccolini, kale, avocado, black pearl barley, chilli, basil, activated almonds, coriander, pepitas and a soft-boiled egg for $17.

Superfood Breakfast at The Merchant’s Guild – Bentleigh
Naming ingredients “superfoods” does make us feel better about eating them. At The Merchant’s Guild in Bentleigh does a Superfood Salad that is a colourful bowl of goodness, with avocado, kale, broccoli flowerette, barley, mung sprouts, green chilli and pumpkin seeds on toast with light cottage cheese and free-range eggs. $18.50

Morning salad at Frank & Ginger – Caulfield North
By the team from Gardiner & Field, Frank & Ginger continues to make simple food really well. Everything here feels clean and bright, especially its morning salad with green leaves, avocado, cherry tomatoes, mint, grilled haloumi, sunflower seeds, hummus, a pesto-poached egg, pumpkin, soy croutons, finished with dukkah. It’s $14, with your choice to add smoked salmon or bacon for another $5.

Kingfish Ceviche at Twenty & Six Espresso – North Melbourne
If you’re game enough to confront cured fish in the morning, the ceviche at Twenty & Six Espresso is special. It comes laid out in a pretty spread of herb-crusted kingfish with smoked baby potatoes, asparagus, lemon oil, a poached egg and horseradish cream for $20.

Carrot Falafel Salad at Grain Store (CBD)
We still think the Grain Store is a bit of a secret, at the Spencer Street end of Flinders Lane. With a slight Middle Eastern influence, this colourful falafel salad is actually on the lunch menu, but can be ordered for breakfast, too. Packed full of flavour, it includes falafels made with carrot and sumac, served with white bean hummus over cauliflower, rice, corn kernels, goji berries, nigella seeds and dressed with a sweet tahini agave dressing. $19.
