The crew at BOY & Co. has developed some inventive flavours at its shop dedicated to milkshakes and fries. Co-owners Ellen Donald, Bella Plunkett-Gillan and Eamon Sheahan have a background in hospitality, but they also share a serious passion for shakes.
They noticed the popularity of the creamy beverage in Melbourne rise and decided it deserved to take centre stage. “We saw the milkshake trend starting to build, and it was interesting seeing certain cafes offering them. But it was just part of the menu – it wasn’t the menu,” says Donald. To remedy that BOY & Co. offers 11 flavours of milkshake. Plunkett-Gillan says emphatically, “Burgers have been done.”
Aside from The Heisenberg (Blue Heaven), the majority of sauces such as strawberry, vanilla and apple are house-made and preservative free. The Britney Spearmint shake, featuring choc-peppermint sauce and Oreo crumbs, is already a fast favourite.
Trips to Germany and Amsterdam inspired the playful fries component, and BOY & Co. is using Europe’s preferred method of chip distribution – the cone. Chip options include sweet potato and salt and vinegar, you can load them up with a gravy or chilli-cheese topping, which can make for a pretty filling meal, if not a particularly healthy one. And if you prefer a more solid dessert, a soft-serve machine is in the works. “We’ve got some really fun and exciting flavour ideas, so stay tuned,” she says.
The interior, designed by Jean Paul Ghougassian from Comme Design, evokes a cheery retro diner, with a slick honeycomb tile bench and cosy booths that comfortably seat groups.
Future plans include an outdoor cinema in the spacious courtyard and alcoholic shakes for a late-night crowd. A food truck is also in the pipeline, delivering shakes and fries to the hungry hoards at festivals and summer-time beach goers.
