If you can’t stand that cliché “every hour is happy hour”, we feel you. We like our beer cold, affordable and at a great venue. So we’ve rounded up some of the best beer specials in Melbourne, week in week out.
Happy hour: Tue to Fri 4pm–7pm
Collingwood favourite The Gem runs $3 pots, $6 pints and $12 jugs during its generous happy “hour”. Choose from six taps, including beers from Furphy, Little Creatures, James Squire and White Rabbit. While you’re there, score a cheap dinner; there are half-price tacos, Texas fries and wings on offer, too.
The Grace Darling
Happy hour: Mon to Fri 4pm–6pm
The Grace Darling isn’t just the second-oldest pub in Melbourne, it was the first stone building in Collingwood. The Smith Street corner venue runs its current iteration from Monday to Friday, 4pm to 6pm offering pots for $3.50 and pints for $7. There are gigs in the band room Wednesday to Sunday (Wednesday nights are free).
The Crafty Squire
Happy hour: Mon to Fri, 4pm-7pm
Housing the only working microbrewery in the Melbourne CBD, The Crafty Squire on Russell Street is a cross between a gastropub, bar, dining hall and brewery. All that makes it a multi-disciplined solution to basically any need involving beer and/or food. Happy hour here runs from 4pm-7pm, Monday to Friday, and offers $9 pints across the full in-house James Squire range, including limited edition releases. Match them to an in-house menu that ranges from share plates to beer-infused mains like Pilsner beef stroganoff pie and Golden Ale battered fish.
The Windsor Castle
Happy hour: Fri to Mon 4.30pm–7.30pm
A short walk from the main drag of Chapel Street in Windsor you’ll find this very distinctive lime-green pub with pink elephants on the roof. During happy hour bring your mates for $10 jugs, $5 pints and $2.50 pots of Furphy.
Tyranny of Distance
Happy hour: every day 4pm–7pm
“Lube your soul” is the motto at this “cafe and lubritorium” in Windsor inside a converted petrol station. Happy hour is consistent here; it goes down between 4pm and 7pm every day of the week. You’ll get change from a fiver with $4 schooners, and there’s also a range of craft brews to sort through, including Little Creatures Bright Ale, White Rabbit Pale and Furphy.
The Vic Bar
Happy hour: Mon to Sat 6pm–9pm
Right at peak drinking time the Vic Bar in Abbotsford offers $6 pints. Probably worth getting there a little early, though, because it gets packed, especially now it’s hosting live music. Don’t despair if it’s a Sunday: $5 tinnies have you covered.
Happy hour: Thu 9pm–midnight
If you’re keen to start your weekend a little earlier than most, head to Little Collins bar-club New Guernica on a Thursday night. Pots of beer are the proper old-school price of $2.50 and the deal is available from 9pm until midnight. Considering New Guernica is open until 5am on Thursdays, that’s early.
