More often than not, using beer in cocktails can have some rather one dimensional or lacklustre results. Aside from the punchy Michelada, options such as the old Shandy or ballsy Boilermaker make one thing clear – the two beverage options rarely cross paths to form a marriage of one, and if so, it’s barely ever a drinker’s first preference.
After a little consideration, however, it’s clear that this simply comes down to a few minor issues. Firstly, there really are no inspired classic beer cocktails (have you ever ordered a Shandy at your favourite local?). As a beer-loving nation, the majority of our discerning population enjoys the great beer we have on offer just as it is. Finally, the flavour profile of beer is difficult to enhance with a range of additional ingredients.
But when working with an approachable and refreshing option, such as a lager, pilsner or even a seasonal wheat beer, a brew can easily be used in place of a soft drink or mixer. As each of these beer varieties have traditionally been created with summer in mind, the additional use of fruits and sweet liqueurs in the cocktail is really a no brainer.
So with that in mind, we asked Baby’s Bonny Napolitano to provide us with a few Peroni cocktail recipes that are sure to change your perspective on beer cocktails and are perfect for making over the summer months. And the best thing about them? Warm beer will never pose any thirst quenching dilemmas.
The Cloudy Day
30ml St Germain elderflower liqueur
60ml apple juice
wedge of lemon
Pour the elderflower liqueur and apple juice into a cocktail shaker, then fill with ice and shake. Strain into a tall glass filled with ice and top up with Peroni. Garnish with a lemon wedge.
The Peroni Spritz
30ml apricot brandy
30ml maraschino liqueur
wedge of lemon
Like the Cloudy Day, pour Aperol, apricot brandy and maraschino liqueur into a cocktail shaker, then fill with ice and shake. Strain into a tall glass filled with ice and top up with Peroni. Garnish with a lemon wedge and maraschino cherry.
The Peroni Refresher
30ml ginger liqueur
30ml sugar syrup
30ml fresh limejuice
fresh basil leaves
slice of lemon
Pour the ginger liqueur, sugar syrup and limejuice into a tall glass. Add a few fresh basil leaves and fill with ice. Finish by topping up with Peroni and garnish with a sprig of fresh basil and a slice of lemon.
