What do you get when you combine the smarts of restaurateur Jason M Jones (Entrecote, Stables of Como), coffee roaster and cafe roller-outer Ramez Abdulnour (Rosso Roasting Co., Drugstore Espresso, Union St Brewers) and former Tonka and Coda chef, Alan Wineera-Timu?

The answer is Bancroft Brewers – the latest coffee oasis to crop up in Elsternwick.

Its namesake is a nod to a key player in Melbourne’s coffee history, Henry Bancroft, who introduced the Gaggia Espresso Machine to Melbourne in 1954. Abdulnour has created a specialty blend for the cafe in his honour. Offered alongside a range of single origins sourced from micro coffee farms around the globe, Bancroft Brewers’ specialty coffees include batch brew, cold brew and espresso-filled coconuts.

Inspired by the 'fern houses' of the 1980s, Bancroft Brewers is reminiscent of a classic conservatory – well, at least one that’s been stripped back and plied with caffeine. The site was most recently the south-side iteration of Joseph Abboud’s Moor's Head. Jones recently partnered with him for Moor Please in Daylesford. Drugstore Espresso duo Zachary Riggs and Isaac Constantine have been brought in as managers.

To eat you’ll find bagels, eggs your way and hearty sides. Blended smoothies, grain salads and a selection of raw and baked goods hit the sweet spot, while organic herby lamb meatballs, fried buttermilk chicken po’ boys and raw zucchini pasta bring substance come lunchtime.
