If you need any more proof that Melburnians can’t survive without coffee, look to Mayday. The newest project by the guys from Axil Coffee Roasters is literally named for it.

“We’re your mayday,” says co-owner Adam Mariani. “You need coffee or you got a hangover – you come to us. We’ll save you.”

Mayday opened on Bridge Road just over a month ago, in the corner site that once housed Olmecs Bakery (it was Clover & Rye more recently). The huge 120-seater is airy and flush with natural light, thanks to bi-fold windows, white walls, polished concrete and natural timbers.

Isaac Pene, who worked for the group at Albert Park’s Petty Officer (since sold), has been reenlisted to head up the kitchen at Mayday. All the usuals are on the menu, such as smashed avocado and eggs Benedict, but mostly with a twist – the avocado is seasoned with nori salt and yuzu, and the Benedict is made with a bacon chop and served on a sesame bagel.

“We want to be a little different, but still give people what they want,” says Mariani.

Coffee is the main game here (“that’s what we know and what we do best,” he says), so aside from daily and weekly food specials, there will be cold-drip and batch-brew specials. It also has a liquor license, so there’s some booze on the list, too.

In about two months, a small pastry kitchen will open up at the back of the cafe. It will produce a selection of croissants, cronuts and cruffins. It’ll mostly service Mayday and the other cafes under the Axil umbrella, although there will be a separate entrance on Lord Street for retail customers.
