The grand opening of Benny Burgers is finally happening this Saturday June 17, and the keenest customers are set to eat for free. Broadsheet reported on the project from Vue de Monde chef Shannon Bennett in October last year, which is reputedly inspired by the barbeque skills of his dad, Benny.

To celebrate, Bennett and his team are giving away free burgers from 11am to the first 100 customers through the door. However, that won’t be the end of the hamburger carnival on Saturday. If you can’t make it out of bed for a free burg’, local band of many curls, Kingswood, will be playing in-store from 7pm.

Where many in Melbourne’s burger scene follow a course of pure indulgence, with triple patties and extra, extra bacon, Bennett saw a gap for a more holistic product. The burgers at Benny use free-range protein and organic vegetables where possible. Or in the case of “Mark’s Burger”, line-caught Barramundi.

Benny Burgers opens 11am Sat June 17 at 19 Swan Street, Richmond.

Update - A previous version of this article referred to Shannon Bennett's new fast-food project as 'Benny's Burgers'. The correct name of the restaurant chain is 'Benny Burger'.
