Before you start booking your Christmas work lunches and family dinners, consider this year’s list of participating DineSmart restaurants first. The grassroots charity initiative by StreetSmart, which for the past 10 years has called on restaurants to help local charities gather donations, is back for the holiday season.

From November 11 to December 31, each table from participating restaurants will be asked to add an extra $2 or more to their bill, which will go towards helping people who are homeless. Since launching in 2003, the initiative’s popularity has taken off. In 2012, DineSmart raised over $360,000 and they plan on raising the bar to $400,000 this year, to fund over 100 homeless projects.

With over 140 restaurants and cafes throughout the east coast registered as DineSmart participants this year, there have never been more eateries to choose from. In Melbourne alone, there are 56 participating restaurants ranging from hatted venues such as Ezard and Longrain, to the more casual options like Chin Chin, Saigon Sally and Shawcross Pizza. So whether diners are enjoying a quick slice of pizza on the way to a weekend gig or a four-course dinner with the office team, it will be equally easy to spread the holiday cheer with a donation.

Not sure where your nearest DineSmart restaurant is? We’re lending a hand to our friends at StreetSmart by assigning a DineSmart ‘stamp’ next to the participating restaurants in our venue directory, and you will be able to search by ‘DineSmart restaurants’ too.
