Aussie black truffle season is at its peak between June and August. Which means Dine Out, Broadsheet ’s winter food festival which runs in Melbourne from Monday August 4 to Sunday August 10, will be one of your last chances this year to have some truly great truffles.
These three events – from Maha, Marmelo and Maker & Monger – put truffles front and centre.
Manjimup Truffles and Mount Mary Wines at Maha
For Dine Out, Shane Delia’s CBD restaurant Maha will showcase Manjimup Truffles, a family-run Western Australian truffle farm that has been harvesting the prized ingredients for over 20 years.
The one-time-only four-course dinner on Monday August 4 is $195 per person, and will include the likes of smoked potato and kishk (a dried, fermented mix of yoghurt and cracked wheat) with black garlic, pine mushrooms, and Manjimup black truffles. Maha has also secured wines from Mount Mary, one of the most revered wineries in the country. For an extra $250 per person, enjoy the luxe truffle meal with the Mount Mary 2020 Quintet, 2021 Triolet, 2021 chardonnay and 2020 pinot noir. Book here.
Truffle Specials at Maker & Monger
Anthony Femia’s Prahran Market stall Maker & Monger is renowned for the quality of its cheeses and the knowledge it dispenses alongside them.
For Dine Out, the shop is amping up the funk with two specials featuring truffles sourced from Canberra and northern Victoria by Maker & Monger’s esteemed market neighbour, Damian “Mushroom Man” Pike OAM.
The first is a truffle cacio e pepe, with fresh pasta twirled in pecorino pepato, a Sardinian raw milk cheese, and finished with Pep-brand pepper and shavings of Canberran truffles. The second is the toastie of your dreams, with truffle, Marcel Petite Comté bechamel and Normandy butter on brioche. Both specials will be available from Maker & Monger on Saturday August 9 and Sunday August 10.
Truffled Martini & Bikini at Marmelo
During the entirety of Dine Out, Marmelo, Ross and Sunny Lusted’s Portuguese CBD restaurant, is putting on a truffle-packed mini Martini and toasted cheese combo. Book a seat at the bar or walk in, and for $36 enjoy a truffle-infused mini-Martini served alongside a bikini sandwich (a Spanish toastie) layered with truffle beschamel, slices of black truffle and melted Manchego cheese.
