The team at Melbourne Food and Wine Festival aren’t just all about the food festival in March. To fill in the gaps between one and the next, they also put on an annual month-long event starting on Sunday September 1 to celebrate spring’s bounty of fresh produce – The Spring Graze.

Now in its fifth year, Natalie O’Brien, CEO of Melbourne Food and Wine Festival presented by Bank of Melbourne, says that The Spring Graze will showcase tasty local produce ranging from new wines to fresh baby vegetables.

“This September, we’re gathering more than 50 events across the city and out in regional Victoria to put the spotlight on our state’s fresh new-season produce,” she says. “Think laidback lunches at wineries tasting new-release drops, sunny picnics in the city and one-off dinners celebrating the season’s hero ingredient, spring lamb.”

Events will take place at some of Melbourne’s favourite restaurants, as well as those in regional Victoria. Regional events include Spring Break (a communal Sunday lunch at Eastern Peake Vineyard) and The Secret Places Picnic at Peppermint Ridge Farm, where guests will be kitted out with a picnic hamper full of fresh farm ingredients.

Back in the city, events range from food and wine pairings to inexpensive DIY picnics. Pick a selection of locally made snacks and deli items at Clementine’s on Degraves Street to take out for an inner city picnic date. Alternatively, head to Armadale Cellars’ Cabernet Challenge to sample wines from iconic Victorian vineyards, benchmarked against examples from Margaret River, Coonawarra, Bordeaux and California’s Napa Valley, along with a roast lamb dinner.

The Spring Graze runs September 1–30 at various locations around Victoria.
