The American writer Clifton Fadiman once said, “Cheese is milk’s leap toward immortality”. It is a serious matter. So we know better than to insult you with a bunch of Gouda puns, cheese rhymes and cheddar-believe-it jokes when we look at the festivals celebrating it this spring.

From French festivals to food festivals to, well, cheese festivals, over the next couple of months events across the board will celebrate the deliciousness, and the seriousness, of cheese. Spring has sprung. More cheese, please.

Cheese With A View at Spring Street Grocer
Melbourne’s Spring Street Grocer is famous for its selection of artisan cheese. This Saturday, it’s offering a one-hour Grand Tour of European cheese in its renowned basement cheese cellar. The cheesemakers will take you on a tour through England, France, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands. There will be blue cheese, hard cheese, all types of cheese. You will gain much cheese knowledge. Which is as good a way to prepare for the Grand Final as any.

Prahran Market Cheese Festival
Prahran Market’s annual Cheese Festival was created by The Cheese Shop Deli owner, Angelo Polidoras. In three years it has evolved from a low-key, week-long celebration of cheese to a one-day cheese extravaganza. There will be pop-up cheese eateries and cooking demos by Femia, who seems to be the city’s go-to cheese man (and whose Maker and Monger cheese cart you can visit). A Meatmaiden Mac‘n’Cheese Marquee will be on site, as well as a fondue tent from Milk the Cow. Watch out for the cheese-wheeling race that will involve the market traders.

Williamstown Wine and Cheese Fest
After the success of last year’s festival, the Williamstown Wine and Cheese Fest returns in October for another day of delicious jazz, cheese and wine. Confirmed for the day are stallholders Frencheese (Which specialises in raclette fondue cheese, melted and served to your personal taste) and bocconcini experts That’s Amore! Cheese. There will be olive and charcuterie stalls, as well as pretty much anything you can think of that goes well with wine, and of course, with cheese. Such as a beautiful Port Melbourne sea view, local produce and live jazz and entertainment all day.

Paris to Provence French Festival
Paris to Provence is Melbourne’s annual French festival – taking over South Yarra’s Como House and Garden for a weekend each year. As is the French way, it will be très cheesy, with cheese stalls from Yarra Valley Dairy, Fitzroy’s Shifty Chèvre, L’artisan Cheese and Milk the Cow to name a few. The grounds will replicate a French village for the weekend. In addition to cheese, there will be wine, food and activities (the French bulldog fancy-dress party is a highlight here).
