As restaurants, bars and cafes around the country adjust their regular programming to survive the coronavirus crisis, South Melbourne Market has made a significant change.
In an effort to reduce the number of people entering the market itself, operators have launched a drive-through pick-up service, so you can shop fresh fruit and vegetables, fresh pasta, take-home meals, cheese, spices, chocolate, meat, seafood and more from the comfort of your car.
You’ll need to place an order in advance with each stallholder (either by email or over the phone) and organise payment directly. Most stalls will stop taking orders at 12pm Wednesday March 25, and your order will be ready for pick-up on Thursday March 26 in the York Street carpark between 2pm and 7pm.
On the day, you’ll be asked to wait in your car and no cash will change hands.
For now it’s a one-week trial, but if all goes well the collection service will continue for the foreseeable future.
Some stalls are also offering home delivery.
