The trio that brought us Gorski & Jones have set up shop next door with their new venture, Smith Street Alimentari – a convenient one-stop shop that is part deli, cafe and food store.
This latest venture from Meaghan Gorski and Paul and Linda Jones (the team also behind Brunswick Street Alimentari) is a welcome addition to the Smith Street strip, which, despite having an abundance of standout restaurants and cafes, could definitely use a specialty grocer down the Johnston Street end. With limited seating and very little active floor service, the premise is to choose from the ready-made meals, daily lunch specials and provisions lining the shelves and fridges to take away.
For lunch, $16.50 will get you a portion of meat – try the free-range chickens fresh off the rotisserie – with your choice of hot or cold sides such as salads, wilted cavolo nero or roasted spuds. Maybe the pork roast with applesauce in a hot panini from Baker D. Chirico; or choose from the array of savoury offerings made in-house including arancini, Cornish pasties or sausage rolls.
They’re open until 7pm, so you can pick up lasagne, risotto, curry or meatballs for dinner; or if you’re feeling less lazy, you can get dinner started with a packet of handmade pasta or pizza dough.
A concise but comprehensive range of high quality condiments are there too: farro, freekeh, salts, stocks, wine, oils; and a dairy section stocked with grana padano, pecorino and housemade anchovy and herb butters. Like its two siblings, Smith Street Alimentari offers fine Veneziano coffee and a bountiful sweet section of cakes, tarts and Lebanese pastries. It’s a fusion of quality and convenience that places delicious food – or as the Italians say, alimentari – at the fore.
