Enter through the lobby of the recently built Oakwood Premier Melbourne building and take the lift up 40 levels to Sky Bar, a ritzy new drinking and dining destination in the CBD. Sitting 139 metres above Normanby Street – and offering uninterrupted 360-degree views across Melbourne – it’s a real show stopper.
“Our vision for this venue has been to show off our city in all its glory,” says Sky Bar’s general manager Christian Sujer. “We have put a lot of effort into making Sky Bar an entire experience.” It’s owned by Yarra Hotel Group, also behind Oakwood Premier.
Entrancing bird’s-eye-view videos of the city are projected onto the terrazzo floor and mirrored walls in the foyer, while an elegant lounge with space for 70 has a 16-metre stone bar and floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Take a seat here or on the seemingly floating outdoor lounge for some fancy snacking (caviar, foie gras macarons and braised venison croquettes).

SIGN UPThe extensive drinks list includes a range of local and international whiskies, fortified wines and gins, in addition to a robust cocktail offering: try the Martini stirred with Never Never oyster shell gin, or the Moondance made with French vodka, white creme de cacao and smoked passionfruit.
Sky Bar’s moody restaurant Strato adds to the sky-high experience. Here, Wagyu beef tartare with a quail egg, poached lobster with champagne foam, and a lavender-glazed roast duck with fennel and figs are just a few of the luxed-up dishes on offer.
“Sky Bar and Strato provide a multi-sensory experience, celebrating the polarity between dark and light,” Sujer says. “Our goal was to create five unique and individual spaces that have their own identity but at the same time flow into each other to create a whole venue that carries the same philosophy.”
The venue also has two private spaces – one with its own dedicated elevator – available to book for extravagant functions or events.
