It inspires the feeling of being in a Shanghai opium den, or an opulent boudoir. But the cosy space of Liverpool Street’s New Gold Mountain hides neither gold nor illicit drugs. Instead, it holds a wealth of cocktail-making knowledge.

This hidden laneway bar to the side of Chinatown is styled on old-world China. Its jade-green decor, ornate upholstery and sculpted ceiling furnishings set a moody, plush, indulgent tone. The upper level is a small room with lush fittings and a great wall of booze.

The specialty cocktails made in house from spirits sourced from all over the world are difficult to top. New Gold Mountain’s bartender Callan Green lets us in on the recipe for a drink to sip on while lounging in a den of your own.
