Taking their name from jazz master Louis Armstrong, Satchmo's Den creators James Martin and Tom and Nat Gaden have found a way to spin together three things Melburnians hold dearest to them: good coffee, good food, and a good atmosphere. And it's clear that they've managed to go about it in a way that sets them apart from the rest of the CBD pack.

To begin with, their interior – bursting with colourful bits and pieces from head to toe – immediately sets them apart from the more subdued cafes. Aside from the multitude of succulents jammed into the space, there's also an abundance of record covers adorning the walls and a rather crafty little yarn post (lovingly created by Tom's mum) out the front.

The breakfast menu is brilliantly simple. Categorised by cereal, eggs or beans, Satchmo’s Den makes that early morning decision of what to eat that little bit easier. And with former Wee Jeanie barista Martin behind the machine, you're in the safest of hands when it comes to receiving a quality morning caffeine hit.

While Tom takes care of the kitchen, Nat looks after front of house including ensuring one of the finest mid-morning soundtracks around plays from 7.30am every weekday.

Satchmo's is an absolute keeper.
