With Brunswick and Smith Street nearing food and specialty-coffee capacity, it makes sense that some of that goodness is going to spill over onto Johnston Street. The latest is Addict Food and Coffee, a new little cafe by partners Greg Brassil and Joe Ventura.
“Addict” isn’t a reference to caffeine fiends who headache and twitch without their daily dose. Rather, it’s about the obsession of the guys running it.
“I like just the coffee side of it; I don’t really like the behind-the-scenes, business side of it. I’d rather just stand here making coffee – that’s it.”
After a two-year search, the duo found the perfect site on the corner of Johnston and Gore Streets, with wrap-around windows and a shady coolibah to stick a picnic table under.
Addict is serving Padre coffee in both espresso and filter, with a rotating grinder doing guest roasts. Two ex-St. ALi chefs, Mark Boyd and Steve Hogan run the kitchen, doing creative takes on breakfast regulars such as potato hash with mushroom duxelles, caramelised onion and poached egg. Special numbers include an outrageous cheese kransky, confit tomato, relish and a poached egg on sourdough.
While there’s ample choice on the coffee and grub front, there’s only one thing on the stereo: old-school hip-hop. “I think music’s big. It’s the first thing I notice when I walk into a joint,” says Brassil. “I wanna hear Jurassic 5, I wanna hear old Nas, I wanna hear Blackalicious.”
