Some like to open a new venue quietly. Others like to give away free ice-cream on their first day.
Pidapipo is bravely going the second. It will greet its new Chapel Street customers with a free scoop on opening day, this Friday April 8, from 4pm to 7pm. Enjoy your free scoop of any of Pidapipo’s flavours in a cup or a cone.
The site, which used to be Windsor Cafe, is substantially larger than the Lygon Street store. There are a few seats inside and 15 outside.
“We get a lot of people coming over from the other side of town to visit the Carlton store,” says owner Lisa Valmorbida. “And with so much happening in the Windsor area, we think it is the perfect location to open a second store.”
The larger space means there’s more opportunity to experiment with flavours in the new gelato laboratory. The Windsor store will introduce gelato cakes, such as a bacio and chocolate bombe Alaska, and a pumpkin pie. The cakes are exclusive to the Chapel Street store at this stage, and are made to order.
There will be unusual new gelato flavours as well, including a saffron-risotto flavour; carrot cake and mascarpone; and an avocado and lime sorbet.
Melbourne-based interior designer Rabindra Naidoo (also behind Self-Preservation and Whisky + Alement) designed the space, drawing references from Italian design in the 1950s and ’60s. Naidoo has incorporated marble and brass throughout.
Pidapipo opens its second store on Friday April 8 at 4pm at 85 Chapel Street, Windsor.
