Piccolina’s Grey Gelato Is Back With Six New Mystery Flavours

Grey gelato usually means black sesame or Earl Grey tea, but at last year’s Escala de Cinzas (Greyscale) art installation, visitors never found out what flavour the grey gelato they ate was.

At the installation from Brazilian artist João Loureiro and Piccolina at MPavillion, visitors chose from six gelato flavours that were all different shades of grey. The catch? None of the flavours are labelled, and you have to order by shade alone – from light grey to near black.

It proved so popular that it’s returning this summer, and Melburnians can experience Loureiro and Piccolina’s grey gelato every weekend from Friday December 20 to Saturday March 22. The flavours are never revealed, but the six flavours on offer this year will be completely different to last year’s.

You can get one ($6.50), two ($8.50) or three ($10.50) scoops of gelato in your grey cone or cup. While there are no tasters, there will be a dairy-free option and accommodations for allergies where possible. The artwork is supported by Pinacoteca de São Paulo.
