Since 1922 Italy’s classic Baci chocolates have been spreading the message of love. Each bite-sized hazelnut chocolate kiss comes wrapped in a multilingual love note.

With Mothers Day fast approaching, Melbourne’s Piccolina Gelateria is launching its own super-sized gelato “Bacio”, complete with a note to let mum know how much you love her.

Originally created by Italian chocolate company Perugina, Baci (which means “kisses” in Italian) are a mixture of smooth chocolate mixed with finely chopped hazelnut, coated in dark chocolate, topped with a whole hazelnut and wrapped in silver with a love note hidden inside.

“What do you get for your mum? It’s really hard. There are so many cheesy gift cards and I think that idea of un-wrapping something and finding the little note is really sweet,” says Piccolina managing director Sandra Foti.

Piccolina’s version has Baci gelato and a crunchy hazelnut praline top, all coated with dark chocolate and wrapped in foil.

The love note will be written in Italian and English, and there are three variations available including “Mum, a title just above Queen.”

Love notes are not currently customisable but Foti says that could be on the cards if the Bacio stays on the Piccolina menu.

Each Bacio di Piccolina costs $16 and serves 2 to 4 people. It’s available at Piccolina’s Collingwood, Hawthorn and St Kilda stores. Pre-ordering is advised and there’s a minimum 48-hour wait for online orders.
