Nestled between Jolimont Station, the MCG and some rather swanky East Melbourne real estate, Persillade has found itself the perfect spot to become the go-to for a diverse mix of local residents, office workers and footy crowds.

Owned by Aidan and Tanya Raftery, the new bistro is aptly named after the fresh and tangy French condiment made from parsley and garlic.

Persillade operates as a cafe in the mornings and a modern French bistro for lunch and dinner, hosting business lunches and weekend brunches alike. Drawings by illustrator Oslo Davis punctuate the menus and hang from the walls beside the exposed kitchen, adding a softer touch to the otherwise sleek interior (fitted out by Clear Design). Davis’s signature sketches depict the Persillade team and their friends and family, including the Rafterys’ cat Henry.

Head chef Jake Scannell has created a short, concise menu that aims to please a broad cross-section of diners. Breakfast is a no-fuss affair, ranging from house-made crumpets to the heartier Ploughman’s breakfast and breakfast burger with sausage, onion jam and barbecue sauce.

A second menu caters to long lunches and the dinner crowd and is not strictly French, with the chicken with vegetable fricassée and garlic cream sitting comfortably alongside a Moroccan-inspired lamb with chickpeas and labne.

Wines from the cellar (acquired from the eatery’s previous tenants, Europa) make for a list that is significantly longer than the food menu, with bottles sorted in categories ranging from ‘The Road Well Travelled’ (expect familiar flavours) to ‘Paved with Gold’ (for the special occasions). Whatever you pick, it's sure to go great with the selection of cheeses and charcuterie on offer.
