“Welcome to the family” is the tagline, and Fury & Son’s new brewpub is definitely a family affair.
The Keilor Park brewery began in 2016, founded by father and son Andrew and Reno Georgiou. Andrew’s wife Kat took care of the design and layout of the new on-site bar, and the food offering comes from Kit and Prue Houston, the husband and wife behind barbeque retail business Houston Barbecues.
“Over Christmas time a lot of the local people started coming in and saying: ‘Hey, can we have something to eat and have a drink’, and we got sick of turning them away,” Andrew says.
Fury & Son is classic brewpub, filled with handmade wood tables in a spacious industrial warehouse. At lunchtime it’s full of hungry workers from nearby businesses; at night, the after-work crew is joined by local families and couples.
The smell of smoked meat hits you as soon as you walk in. The menu includes pulled-pork burgers, chicken wings, and in the coming weeks, brisket and short rib.
Beer-wise, the focus is on clean and easy drinking; the core range consists of a pale ale, a pilsner and an IPA. Seasonal offerings include the refreshing Citra Sour and a deftly balanced, smoky and sweet Scotch Ale. It also has two rotating taps to showcase other local breweries – Hawkers and Two Birds during our visit – and cider from Golden Axe.
For now Fury & Son is only open Fridays, but if local support continues the Georgious will change that.
