Cuffing season is well and truly here. If you’re looking for a new date spot, we asked seven of Melbourne’s coolest chefs, including Rosheen Kaul and Mischa Tropp, where they recommend taking someone for a first date.
Two bar seats up on the bar at Bahama Gold. Amazing cocktails and wine with the option of ordering a few bites from Old Palm Liquor – you’re going to want the flatbread, trust me.
– Sebastian Pasinetti, Oko Rooftop and Cafe
Apollo Inn or Caretaker’s Cottage. Lots of dimly lit nooks and corners, snacks and perfect drink offerings.
– Rosheen Kaul, Chinese-ish author

– Mischa Tropp, Toddy Shop
I recently went to Brico in Carlton North – third-wheeling as I do with my friends – and thought, “This would be a really nice date spot.” The service was attentive, not overwhelming, and there’s a good food and wine selection.
– Emma Dawson, Poodle Bar & Bistro
I’d go to The Moon for a first date because there’s a lovely intimate environment that’s casual. But also to be able to say, “I’ll take you to the moon and back.”
– Lucy Whitlow, Osteria Ilaria and Grana
My partner and I had our first date at Monty’s. It’s easygoing and fun with good drinks. Plus, you can get pizza from 1000 Lire next door delivered to the bar. For want of a better term, I’m a carb queen.
– Giorgia McAllister Forte, Monforte Viennoiserie
For me I would say some of my best conversations with people have been over a bowl of noodles, so if I wanted to get to know someone, I would suggest Bowltiful. The lamb offal broth might be a wild first date choice, but it’s delicious none the less, and I guess the element of choosing broth, along with noodle thickness and spice level, could be a fun experience with someone you’re just getting to know.
