Domain Road, South Yarra recently set records for residential land prices. And a new cafe, My Legendary Girlfriend (which draws its name from the 1992 Pulp song), has just opened on the local strip opposite the Botanical Gardens.

Perhaps the interior aesthetic of My Legendary Girlfriend is meant to align with the UK alternative music scene 20 or so years ago. The black and white Luna Park collage along the bar does feel somewhat reminiscent of a 1990s art installation and is definitely at odds with shiny neighbour The Botanical.

In the front section of the cafe, there’s a high communal table to sit at while you look out over Botanical Gardens and there’s more casual mirrored bar seating along the east wall. Further in, smaller tables sit close together, creating a cosy atmosphere.

The menu is written up on the blackboard. The ‘Paul Cezanne’ comprises French mountain bread with roasted mushrooms and taleggio, or you can keep it simple with eggs cooked how you like (eggs are ‘Green’, from the foothills of the Grampians) or crumpets with Rooftop honey. Banana bread with espresso butter provides an equally pleasing breakfast or afternoon tea option after a jog around the Tan or spot of shopping next door at Turner & Lane.

My Legendary Girlfriend is ticking most of the boxes (the milk is Jonesy’s, the coffee is Atomica). They’re also selling CAPI soft drinks, which are Australian made and owned and use natural and plant-based extracts and botanicals.

Service is shaky but it’s early days. For those South Yarra residents who want a bit more grunge with their eggs, this girlfriend will be long-term.
