Mums deserve a special drink. And while you could reach for the champagne, this cocktail by Jenna Hemsworth (top 25 finalist in 2015’s World Class competition and bartender at Vue De Monde’s Lui Bar) is a much better idea.

Mother’s Prosperity is a twist on the Vieux Carre, an old New Orleans cocktail Hemsworth’s mum, Rosemarie, likes. “She’s fond of classics and straightforward drinks,” says Hemsworth. “This one is inspired by mum’s love of whisky drinks that, ‘don't have all that fancy stuff on them’.”

“It’s dark, subtly sweet and smoky. The chocolate and walnut pair well together to bring those darker flavours forward in the whisky, with the armagnac fortifying the whisky base and adding depth and richness.”

Broadsheet stopped by Hemsworth's family home as she whipped up the cocktail for Rosemarie. If she sounds anything like your mum – classic and warm – then consider whipping her up one of these on her birthday, Christmas or another time when you want to raise a glass to mum.
