It’s hard to think of anyone in the Melbourne food world who’s had a bigger two years than Mischa Tropp. After building his profile through his We Are Kerala pop-ups, the chef opened his first restaurant, the Hot-Listed Toddy Shop , in Fitzroy at the end of 2023. A year later, he followed it up with the 150-seat Hot-Listed Kolkata Cricket Club at Crown.

But even after a packed couple of years, “I’ve got some really new ideas of things I want to do,” Tropp tells Broadsheet. After service on Wednesday December 24, he’ll close Toddy Shop to make way for a brand new concept in the same space. Set to open in February, the new venue will see the chef work with “a group of young up-and-coming industry legends and the next generation of Indian hospitality talent”.

Before then, he’s planning to take time to celebrate Toddy Shop. Over the past year, he’s spent a lot of time at Kolkata Cricket Club. But Tropp says he’ll be back on the floor in Fitzroy a few nights a week, “which means I’ll have time to think about collabs, pop-ups and events”. The restaurant's hours are shifting from daily to Tuesday to Saturday, with Sundays being reserved for a final string of events.

“Toddy Shop’s been sick,” he says. “Toddy Shop blew up and was fun and loud, and I got to open a restaurant in a fun space and do really cool shit and have a great time. It’s opened up lots of doors for me. But I’m really inspired to do something new and get excited about cooking again.”

Toddy Shop, at 191A Smith Street, Fitzroy, will close after service on Wednesday December 24.
