Famous Ramen Chain Mensho Tokyo Melbourne Has Mysteriously Shut

Numerous famous Japanese ramen chains have arrived in Melbourne this past decade. Tonkotsu (pork bone) specialists Ippudo and Hakata Gensuke. Michelin-recognised tori paitan (chicken ramen) spot Tokyo Ginza Kagari. Burnt miso outlier Gogyo. They’ve all been mobbed at various points, but you could make the case that Mensho Tokyo has out-hyped them all.

The brand has about 25 locations spread across Japan, the US, Thailand, Singapore and Australia. They’re all destinations for the original tori paitan, but also for a single signature ramen unique to each location. Melbourne’s lone store was operated by local franchisee Justin Ko, who is not affiliated with the company that runs Sydney’s two stores.

Today came the surprising news that Mensho Tokyo Melbourne has shut without warning, after what appears to be a dispute with the landlord. A re-entry notice – a formal document landlords use to reclaim property from tenants – is currently posted inside the restaurant’s front window, dated to August 19.

Founder Tomoharu Shono confirmed the news on Instagram. “We are aware that Mensho Melbourne has ceased trading and understand the concerns raised by our customers,” he wrote. “The Melbourne location was independently operated. We are currently reviewing the circumstances and seeking legal advice. Mensho remains committed to protecting the integrity of our brand, recipes, and customer experience. We will share further information when appropriate.”

Franchisee Justin Ko was contacted for comment and did not respond in time for publication. We will update this article as we learn more.
