It’s been three weeks since coronavirus restrictions relaxed, allowing Melburnians to meet up for picnics again and remove masks to eat and drink. Just not to consume alcohol – officially, that’s been banned, although cruising the city’s parks, it’s been rare to see many people abiding by that.

As of tomorrow, October 9, the odd rule is kaput, Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton announced at a press conference earlier today. That’s right: you’ll be able to openly crack tinnies and pop bubbles at your picnics this weekend.

“[It’s] really a reflection of a push to more outdoor recreational activities, including picnics,” Sutton said. “It’s a welcome change I’m sure.”

The rule was originally introduced after an impromptu street party in Northcote and a takeaway-drink pub crawl in Richmond happened on the same weekend.
