Mother and daughter team Jonette George and Daniele Wilton are Smudge Publishing: two local ladies producing books about Melbourne and regional Victoria, in a venture spurred on by a love for their hometown and its diverse and unique food and drink culture.

They’re currently in the throws of putting together their third title, Melbourne Laneways & Rooftops; this new coffee table hardback will focus on the history and stories of city laneways and rooftop venues, highlighting the things we love about Melbourne – some we know and perhaps a few we don’t.

Bars, restaurants and cafes in the CBD are currently being reviewed for the book, which will allow tourists and locals alike to discover some unique and often hard-to-find pastures in Melbourne. Signature recipes will also be included, from chefs at a selection of restaurants including Merchant, Syracuse, Terra Rossa, Cookie and Punch Lane. The book will also delve into the stories behind restaurants and restaurateurs such as Portello Rosso, Grossi Florentino and Caterina’s Cuccina.

Other featured venues will include favourite city bars such as Rooftop Bar, Gin Palace, Seamstress and Madame Brussells, as well as Blue Diamond, Loop, The Toff and Ra, among others.

Through this local view of the rich history of the hospitality industry, Melbourne Laneways & Bars is tribute to our city, giving insight into the iconic venues that make up its unique landscape, both on street level and atop buildings.

Previous titles by Smudge Publishing include Produce to Platter – Geelong and Surround Regions and The Food & Wine Lovers Guide, Morning Peninsula.

Melbourne’s Laneways & Rooftops is due for release in July 2011 with a STREAT party launch. All proceeds from this function will be going to STREAT, the 'homeless to hospitality’ charity looking after our street kids, as will $10 from every pre-ordered book.
