The Queen Vic Market’s bustling Deli Hall has this week welcomed quality coffee purveyors, Market Lane, to their ranks.
It’s the fourth store from the duo behind Market Lane, Jason Scheltus and Fleur Studd, joining their existing outlet opposite the Queen Vic Market’s organic fruit and vegetable section, a hole-in-the-wall fixture in Carlton and their flagship roastery and cafe in Prahran Market.
“We approached (Queen Vic) in 2011, before we opened the Therry Street Shop, but it’s very difficult to get a space inside the deli,” says Scheltus. “Most of the other stores have been here for 10-plus years.”
Deli Hall, also known as the Dairy Produce Hall, is a building steeped in history. Until recently, the spot where Market Lane now stands housed a pharmacy, established in 1920. When Scheltus “finally signed the lease and started building in November,” he was conscious of respecting the history and aesthetic of the space, working in close partnership with Heritage Victoria to honour the “very special site.”
“There were things we had to protect and work around,” Scheltus says. “The marble benchtop is original from the 1920’s, as are the window frames. They’re all original nickel and brass, and we haven’t touched them.”
Sarah Trotter of Hearth Studios (also responsible for the design of the Carlton store), has married art deco with minimalism for a clean palette of black, white and timber. There’s a long filter coffee bar where you can stand and watch the baristas at work, as well as a small display of coffee-brewing paraphernalia and five different grinds of beans to take home. If you’re looking for something different, Scheltus recommends “a funny little drink called a spritz,” made from ice, tonic water, double espresso and citrus.
“Pretty much everyone has asked us that,” Scheltus laughs, when asked of the rationale behind opening a new store in such close proximity to the Therry Street location. “For me, it’s not that controversial. Therry Street is a different shopping precinct … they’re completely different customers. It seems different. I’m really excited about it.”
