It’s clear the owners of The Rusty Fox are Kensington locals. As well as knowing their regulars by name, the deli and food store supplies a healthy selection of local, organic and homemade produce not otherwise available in the area.
“We provide what people can’t buy in Kensington,” says co-owner Kim Scott. “There’s nowhere to buy artisan bread or good deli products, and we know that you can’t get these things in Kensington because we live here.”
Having nowhere local to shop for their favourite products, Scott – along with partner and chef Rebecca Creighton and sister Jennifer Galea – sought to bring top-quality, local products to Kensington’s doorstep.
With cheeses from Carlton cheesemonger That’s Amore, smallgoods from Kyneton’s Piper Street, Noisette bread and a selection of fresh meats, the large range of delicatessen products are sourced primarily around Melbourne and Victoria.
The shelves stock everything from premium olive oil to an exquisite smoked maple syrup, as well as jams, relishes and sauces that are made in-house.
In addition, Creighton, a long-time pastry chef, bakes an incredible selection of cakes, tarts and cookies every morning onsite. The baked treats are hard to ignore – most notably the huge, triple-layered red velvet cake with honey and vanilla icing.
A place where drop by after work to pick up a take-home dinner or pleasant spot to have a coffee and read the paper, the small space features an open plan kitchen and counter bench where you can sit and linger.
If you’re dining in, the seasonal menu covers all bases, including the smoked salmon omelette and their own version of the Vietnamese bánh mi.
With a passion for food and community, The Rusty Fox is bringing in and dishing up the best in local produce to the people of Kensington.
