To be fair, The Junction has a shady past. It has been the scarlet lady of the west in many ways and now, in-line with the demographic shifts Newport has undergone of late, The Junction has been treated to her first real nip-and-tuck since her early days.

Publican Jackie Mahony, together with business partner Stuart Metcalfe (after their success with Sabrosso in Seddon), hit all the right notes on the renovation front. The feel is that minimalist, urban and un-offensive look that you do see around a lot, but it is stylish and comfortable, with polished concrete floors and a large bar opening up to a decent sized courtyard.

The large venue boasts 12 beer lines with eight running at present and 50 beers by the bottle. There is a full-sized one-tone wood fire oven selling exclusively to patrons (for now) with plans to deliver locally in the coming months. Finally, the soon-to-be-launched wine room – said to be a more intimate affair – will offer similar boutique stock and serve antipasto-style plates befitting a quiet tipple.

Roxy Boubis of Transport and Mrs Parmas fame is the on-site beer specialist and brings her wealth of knowledge to the table creating a locally-sourced offering that is so extensive they have a ‘beer book’ for patrons to ogle over.

Head chef Jeremy Burberry manages the menu and features simple bites like prawn toast with cucumber and mayo and slow cooked lamb ribs with olive and lemon (already a favourite). All in all, The Junction is just what the area was craving. You’ll jump off the train and drop in for a drink after work and will likely stay for dinner.
