Last year, John Demetrios won season two of Masterchef spinoff series Dessert Masters. Now the pastry chef – who served as executive pastry chef at Omnia and Yugen , held the same role at Vue de Monde and worked at two-Michelin-starred restaurant Oaxen Krog in Sweden – is taking the $100,000 prize money to open Butter Days Bakery in Malvern later this year. We caught up with Demetrios to find out where (and what) he’s eating in Melbourne these days.

What’s your favourite bakery?
We’re so spoilt for choice in Melbourne. I have so many favourites, but lately I have been popping into To Be Frank more than I would like to admit. The Ted Lasso shortbreads are incredibly satisfying.

What’s your go-to breakfast spot?
I always opt for bakery breakfasts and Iris the Bakery in Brunswick is one of the best. I love sitting in there, feeling like I’m inside the actual bakery. All the savoury options are on-point, but the layered potato puff is one of my all-time favourites.

Where do you take visitors when they’re in town?
Embla is my no-brainer in the city. Everything is a flavour bomb and I love the approach to wine. Marion is another solid choice that guarantees everyone leaves happy.

What’s the best place for a drink and snacks?
Suze in Fitzroy North. The wine list is exceptional and the food is off the charts. Sit at the concrete bar and eat your way through all the snacks! Anchovies are a must.

Where do you go for date night?
Pipis Kiosk in Albert Park ticks all the boxes here: Super tasty food, great wines, incredible staff. The beachfront sunset is just the cherry on top.

What’s your favourite ice-cream or gelato spot?
I’m a big Gelato Messina fan. I have my routine down pat: stroll up and down the display and then order a scoop of tiramisu. Every single time.

Where do you go for a special occasion?
I can’t go past Gimlet. The service is exceptional and makes you feel on top of the world. It’s hard to beat when you fancy a big bottle and a luxurious dinner.

What’s the best place to eat with a big group?
Jim’s Greek Tavern brings the big group party vibes – it’s so fun and loud. Order the banquet so there is no thinking involved, and BYO wines and ouzo, of course.

What’s the most underrated restaurant in Melbourne?
Bar Romanee in Yarraville ticks all the boxes for the local neighbourhood restaurant. The steak nights are ridiculous value, and I love the nods to the big French classics.

What’s the best place to solo dine?
My quick and easy lunch favourite is Soi 38. The noodle dishes are spot on.

Where did you go for your last birthday?
Bistra in Carlton. We had such a good time; the pasta dishes never miss.

What’s your bucket list restaurant?
Yiaga in the Fitzroy Gardens has got me so excited. Coming soon in 2025. The attention to detail and passion on this project are leaving me on the edge of my seat.

John Demetrios appears on Masterchef Australia from June 3 on 10 and 10 Play. Catch the show at 7pm on Sundays, and 7.30pm Monday to Wednesday.
